JAN 18th – CD RELEASE PARTY WITH JAZZ GROUP DYALEK AND SPECIAL GUEST ADAM DUNCAN PROJECT

The Ottawa jazz group Dyalek is glad to announce the release of their debut album Misinterpretations. To celebrate the event, they will be throwing a CD Release performance on January 18th 2008 at the Mercury Lounge Nightclub.  Special guest Adam Duncan Project will be opening the stage.

Dyalek is a musical endeavour that arises from the minds of two creative musicians: Denis Haché (piano) and Andrew Letourneau (drums).  Dyalek’s sound is inspired both from classical and modern jazz music. It reconciles these two genres by falling in the grey area separating structured music and chaotic improvisation.  The original compositions are intricate melodies intertwined with fresh improvisations.

The raison d’être of the group is to create and play music that has something more than the prescribed and formalistic ways of what abounds in the music industry.  For example, Dyalek’s compositions encompass odd meters, polyrhythm and polytonality.  This adds a slight tension to the feel of the music, as well as richness to the groove.  As well, Dyalek functions like a musical collective. The duo core invites different musicians to perform with them.  The result is a great musical synergy that is challenging and exciting for the players, and simply fun and bewitching for their listeners.

Their album Misinterpretations contains 6 excellent tracks which take the listener for a refreshing ride.  It translates a rich dialogue between the piano and the drums, as well as guest instruments such as the saxophone, the vibes, the bass and the trumpet.  It evokes a range of emotions that are fresh, inventive but devious.  Each piece takes shape with a pleasant dose of freedom, self-expression and experimentation.  The album is recorded live off-the-floor; in real time, with no special effects. The result is an album that speaks music, straight out!

Come out to Dyalek CD Release Party, January 18th at the Mercury Lounge (56 Byward Market Sq.). Joining them on stage will be an exceptionally talented performer with astonishing improvisations ability:  Linsey Wellman (Saxophone, flute, clarinet).  Also taking part of this exciting event is special guest The Adam Duncan Project (sitar, tabla, bass) with their Indo-fusion sound. Exactly what a crowd needs to warm up!

Show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $7 at the door. You can also pick up Dyalek’s album in Ottawa at Sounds Unlikely (5 Av. Arlington), End Hits (407 Dalhousie), Vertigo Records (193 Rideau).
