Press Release by: Jason
May 27, 2005; Monterey, California - “Thinking locally, acting globally” comes alive as the Monterey Jazz Festival announces new plans for several of its jazz education programs.
In addition to the Monterey Jazz Festival’s Next Generation Jazz Orchestra, which is embarking on an international tour to perform in New York at Sweet Rhythms on July 3, Lincoln Center's "Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola" on July 4, and the Montreal Jazz Festival on July 6, the Monterey Jazz Festival has announced the members of the 2005 MJF County High School All-Star Band and has scheduled an international tour of Japan for this prestigious ensemble July 26-August 8.
Directed by renowned saxophonist and flautist Mr. Paul Cantos, the MJF County High School All-Star Band features the finest young jazz musicians from high schools throughout Monterey County. The band will participate in a series of concerts and cultural exchange programs at high-profile venues in Japan, including the Nanao Jazz Festival on July 30, the Jazz Villlage in Nanao on August 2, Tokyo’s Bb Club on August 3, and a concert in Tomisato on August 6. The tour also includes educational workshops with Monterey students and local Japanese high school musicians in Nanao and Tomisato. The 2005 MJF County High School All-Star Band completes its schedule with a performance at the Monterey Jazz Festival presented by MCI, September 16-18.
To further extend the Monterey Jazz Festival’s continuing commitment to jazz education, the festival has also announced the members of a new ensemble: the 2005 MJF County Middle School Honor Band. This ensemble, directed by MJF Education Director Dr. Rob Klevan, develops the talent of emerging jazz students from middle schools throughout Monterey County through the study of big band repertoire and performance of jazz composition and improvisation.
With educational programs such as the MJF County High School Honor Band, the MJF County Middle School Honor Band, and the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra, the Monterey Jazz Festival aims to change lives through jazz education and spread America’s original art-form, jazz, from Monterey around the world.
