Nottingham Jazzhouse Press Release
19th July 2007
Nottingham Jazzhouse celebrates 10 years at the Bonington.
"Nottingham Jazzhouse is definitely one of the best promoters in the UK and the Bonington Theatre is one of my favourite places to play.”
Theo Travis
Nottingham Jazzhouse promotes a range of international and national jazz groups, as well as championing the freshest talent in the UK today. Whilst promoting events at other venues around Nottingham over the years, the intimate 170 seat Bonington Theatre has been the flagship venue for audiences to hear the best in jazz on a regular basis. The Bonington stage has been graced by such stars as Mal Waldron, Charles McPherson, Barry Harris, John Surman, John Taylor, Uri Caine, Peter Brötzmann and the ever popular Kirk Lightsey, as well as a who’s who of the British jazz scene including returning favourites Alan Barnes, Julian Siegel, Guy Barker, Tina May, Jan Kopinski, Orphy Robinson, Gilad Atzmon, Byron Wallen, and The Zappatistas.
Stan Tracey’s Septet opened the first Jazzhouse season at the Bonington Theatre in September 1997. To celebrate Nottingham Jazzhouse’s tenth anniversary Stan Tracey returns, this time literally going one better, with his Octet, to kick off the new season of Jazz Steps on Thursday 13th September. Celebrations continue on Friday 14th with Jazzhouse’s commitment to promoting new talent by featuring the East Midlands Youth Jazz Orchestra (EMYJO) with Alan Barnes.
Stan Tracey will also be launching the first Nottingham Jazz Piano Competition. This national competition is open to amateur and professional pianists under 30 years old, the winner will receive a Blüthner piano worth £15,000. The finals will be held in 2008 and judges so far include Nikki Iles, Steve Melling, Dave Newton, Tim Richards and James Harpham. Contact Clement Pianos on 0115 970 1106 for details.
