GREAT JAZZ ON THE GREAT HILL

Central Park Conservancy and Jazzmobile Bring Back FREE Jazz Concert on September 15

NEW YORK (August 29, 2007)—The Central Park Conservancy and Jazzmobile, Inc. are teaming up for the glorious return of Great Jazz on the Great Hill with a spectacular line up of performers on Saturday, September 15 at the Peter Jay Sharp Children’s Glade and the Great Hill. Sponsored by the Conservancy, Jazzmobile, the Daily News and WNBC-TV, the free event will run from 1:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Nearly fifteen years ago, Jazzmobile launched Great Jazz on the Great Hill to celebrate the music of Charlie “Bird” Parker. Sadly, funding issues brought the music to an end; but in 1999 Jazz at Lincoln Center picked it up for a couple of years. Now Jazzmobile and the Central Park Conservancy have teamed up to bring it back!

In the playful spirit of jazz, children and adults will improvise visual art, transforming soulful jazz vibes into an expressive, large-scale collaborative mural that will be on display throughout the concert that follows. Led by famed muralist Emmett Wigglesworth, the Family Music and Art Workshop will precede the main concert and run from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.

At 2:00 p.m. featured artists Frank Wess and Jeremy Pelt with The Harlem Renaissance Orchestra, and their special guest, New Orleans jazz vocalist Stephanie Jordan, will take the stage. Yosvany Terry and his Afro-Cuban Septet, the Yédégbe Project, will premiere a newly-commissioned work, and pianist Sergio Salvatore will also perform. The afternoon’s master of ceremonies will be Ty Stephens — first place winner of the 2006 Jazzmobile “Jazz Vocalist Competition.”

Food and refreshments will be on sale by Harlem’s Mobay & Baton Rouge Restaurants. Attendees may bring a picnic lunch and a blanket to join in what is shaping up to be a great afternoon of jazz in Central Park.

Yosvany Terry's performance is made possible by a generous grant from The New York State Music Fund, established by the New York State Attorney General at Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors.

To get to the venue, enter the Park at 106th Street (Duke Ellington Blvd.) and Central Park West and walk up the stairs or ramp to The Great Hill. For more information, please call 212-860-1370.

About the Central Park Conservancy:

The Central Park Conservancy's mission is to restore, manage, and preserve Central Park, in partnership with the public, for the enjoyment of present and future generations. It is a private, not-for-profit organization founded in 1980 that manages Central Park under a contract with the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation. Thanks to the generosity of many individuals, corporations, foundations, and the City of New York, the Conservancy has invested more than $450 million to date into the Park making it a model for urban parks worldwide. The Conservancy provides 85% of Central Park's $25 million annual operating budget and is responsible for all basic care of the Park. About Jazzmobile, Inc:

Jazzmobile, Inc., the oldest not for profit arts organization created just for jazz in the country, was founded in 1964 by jazz master Dr. Billy Taylor and Daphne Arnstein. Its mission is to present, preserve, promote, and propagate jazz – “America’s classical music.” This mission is implemented through quality jazz education and performance programs:  workshops, master classes, lecture demonstrations, arts enrichment programs, as well as performances in clubs and major concert halls here and abroad. Nationally and internationally, Jazzmobile is well known and highly respected for its success in pioneering jazz education programs and the concept of presenting out-of-doors mobile jazz performances. Through these program offerings, Jazzmobile serves a quarter of a million people in New York City and its outlying areas each year and continues to serve as a model for similar jazz programs, organizations and projects.
