A Tribute To Benny Goodman

The King of Swing

Press Release by: Paul J. Youngman

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Bob DeAngelis & His Champagne Symphony Pay Tribute to Benny Goodman with Roy Thomson and Carnegie Hall Concerts

Bob DeAngelis and His Champagne Symphony will present an encore performance of The Coronation of a King: A Tribute to Benny Goodman at Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto on New Year’s Eve 2007. On the heels of the Toronto concert, the Champagne Symphony will commemorate the 70th anniversary of Benny Goodman’s acclaimed 1938 concert at the legendary Carnegie Hall in New York City with a reprise of its show as a special symphonic tribute.

The Coronation of a King features Goodman’s most popular tunes, including "Let’s Dance," "Memories of You," "Stompin at the Savoy," "After You’ve Gone" and "Sing Sing Sing." At the helm of the 50-piece Champagne Symphony is Juno award–winning clarinetist Bob DeAngelis alongside Grammy award-winning trumpeter and arranger John MacLeod. Guests will include the sultry-voiced Melissa Stylianou, Frank Wright on mesmerizing vibes and the dazzling Swing Dance Divas.

Last year, the New Year’s Eve debut of Bob DeAngelis and His Champagne Symphony raised audiences at Roy Thomson Hall to their feet with multiple standing ovations. DeAngelis and MacLeod, along with a full symphonic complement of premier jazz and classical players, proved that Canada possesses some of the world’s greatest musical talent — a feat they intend to duplicate with the two upcoming performances.

The Coronation of a King is presented by Somerset Entertainment Ltd. in association with DeAngelis Entertainment Inc.

BACKGROUNDER

From past to present: Reliving Benny Goodman’s acclaimed Carnegie Hall concert from January 16, 1938

The enormous breakout success of the Benny Goodman Orchestra in the 1930s heralded the birth of the swing era – a time when big bands dominated the airwaves and bandleaders became the pop stars of the day. Goodman, a virtuoso clarinetist and groundbreaking bandleader, was at the forefront of this musical phenomenon. His historic performance at New York’s Carnegie Hall on January 16, 1938, raised swing music to a level of recognition that has never been forgotten.

Seven decades later, music enthusiasts have the chance to rekindle the nostalgia of the golden, bygone era with The Coronation of a King: A Tribute to Benny Goodman, performed by Bob DeAngelis and his stellar 50-piece Champagne Symphony on New Year’s Eve 2007 at Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto. Marking the 70th anniversary of Goodman’s breakthrough concert, the Champagne Symphony will also give a special performance of their show on January 16, 2008 at Carnegie Hall.
