Formed in early 2005, the Jesse Stacken Trio has developed into an ensemble that explores the depths of the piano trio format. The instrument roles, improvisation, and form structures have been re-examined, reconstructed and expanded. The result is music that is fresh, exciting, and free. “That That” (FSNT 308) features ten compositions by Stacken, and two collective improvisations by the trio. Most of the pieces are short sketches, designed to create varying moods for improvisation. Sometimes a soloist actively leads the group. Other times a more collective three-way conversation happens, in which all players contribute equally. The emphasis is on creative interplay and spontaneity. Many of these pieces sound different in each performance.

“That That”
Upon hearing the words “that that” together in a sentence, one doesn’t notice anything unusual. But upon reading those same words, they look strange and one might wonder if they are correctly used. A re-examining occurs. The music on this record, along with the things that inspired it, has a similar quality: The quality of depth beyond the surface. Hopefully on repeated listenings, the listener will notice new things, and previously noted things will be questioned and contemplated. Perhaps then he or she might think. “I didn’t realize that that was what I’ve been hearing all along!” – Jesse Stacken
