3.25.08 - Critically acclaimed and Grammy nominated Jazz vocalist Karrin Allyson returns with Imagina: Songs of Brasil. The new album hits tores this week (March 25) on Concord Jazz and is Allyson’s 11th release for the label. While Karrin has included Brazilian music on her albums and in her live shows throughout her career, the release of 'Imagina: Songs of Brasil' is the first time she has devoted an entire album to the music of Brazil. Produced by Karrin and Nick Phillips, Imagina is a beautiful collection of 14 tracks that features songs sung fully in Portuguese, as well as Brazilian songs with English lyrics by Susannah McCorkle, Chris Caswell, Gene Lees, Paul Williams and Jon Hendricks. Karrin’s love of music began at the young age of five, when she started studying with her mother, a classical pianist. She continued her love affair with music for the next 20 years, touring and recording independently. Karrin’s association with Concord Jazz began in 1992 with her first album, I Didn’t Know About You, which Playboy Magazine called “a stunning debut.” The magazine went on to put Karrin in the company of such legends as Ella Fitzgerald and Shirley Horn. In 2001, she earned two GRAMMY nominations for her tribute to the genius of John Coltrane, Ballads: Remembering John Coltrane. Her two most recent albums, Wild For You and, the Grammy nominated, Footprints, followed the critically acclaimed In Blue, which Newsweek described as, “A superb disc.”
