June 8, 2008 - The 3rd Annual Art of Jazz Celebration June 4-8,2008
GENE DINOVI & DAVE YOUNG
SUNDAY, JUNE 8 - 2:00 PM, Dancemakers Studio
Born in Brooklyn, New York, Gene DiNovi began his career in the 1940s as a teenage bebop pianist in jazz clubs along Manhattan’s fabled 52nd Street. At the end of the decade, and into the next, he was performing and recording with Boyd Raeburn, Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Buddy DeFranco, Chico O’Farrill, and Lester Young, among many other major jazz artists. Also a popular accompanist for singers, DiNovi has played for Peggy Lee, Tony Bennett, Lena Horne, and Carmen McRae. DiNovi first visited Toronto in 1971, while accompanying Carmen McRae, and made the city his home the following year. Since then he has divided his career between solo piano engagements at some of Toronto’s more exclusive rooms and studio work as an arranger and composer of incidental music, jingles, and film scores.
Winnipeg-born bassist Dave Young is equally at home in the worlds of symphonic music and acoustic jazz. He has served as principal double bassist with the Edmonton and Winnipeg Symphonies, as well as with the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra. In the early 1960s Young worked regularly with the late guitarist Lenny Breau. Their now legendary elegant and symbiotic collaboration is captured on Live at Bourbon Street, recorded at that famous Toronto club during a 1983 reunion tour. The list of artists with whom he has shared the stage and/or recording studio is truly a “Who’s Who” of North American jazz: Oscar Peterson, Benny Carter, Clark Terry, Oliver Jones, Rob McConnell, Kenny Burrell, Peter Appleyard, Gary Burton, Ed Bickert and many more.
