June 5th JOHN DENSMORE’S TRIBALJAZZ-legendary Doors Drummer(Show $25, Din & Show $70)

Debut CD: “Tribaljazz” (Hidden Beach Recordings, 2006)

Band Personnel: Legendary Doors member John Densmore-drums/percussion; co-founder Art Ellis on Soprano/Alto Sax and Flute, Marcel Adjibi-percussion; Osama Afifi-bass;  Dave Garfield-piano; Cristina Berio-percussion; Aziz Faye-percussion.

 Website: http://www.tribaljazz.com

While his former pals from The Doors have been busy trying to live in the past, drummer John Densmore has opted to extend his legacy into the future. Taking a globe-spanning approach, his latest project Tribaljazz is, at first glance, a huge departure from anything he ever has done. Yet, the inclusion of a playful, salsa-infused rendition of Riders on the Storm helps to make the outing, as a whole, more accessible.

Tribaljazz, the brainchild of legendary Doors drummer, blends and fuses improvisational jazz, beats and world music. In the end, what you hear is truly, ‘Tribaljazz.’ The band features co-founder Art Ellis on Soprano/Alto Sax and Flute, two master African drummers, an upright bass player, a world-class pianist and a multi-instrumental percussionist.

"For thirty years I’ve been saying I was a jazz drummer before I got into The Doors. In the years since then, I still claim to be a jazz drummer. The problem is I’ve never actually made any jazz records. Finally I am putting my sticks where my mouth is. To achieve that goal, I have joined forces with Art Ellis, a veteran jazz performer and composer. Art had been producing original Afro/Jazz music with Jimmy Haslip of the Yellowjackets, as well as performing as the opening act in festivals with Sting, King Sunny Ade, Milton Nascimento and many others. As co-producers and the nucleus of this project, we have reworked the wonderfully melodic lines of Art’s music into an exciting synthesis that pleases us both. The result is Tribaljazz- an infusion of hypnotic, improvised tribal grooves with accessible, heartfelt jazz tunes." - John Densmore

Tribaljazz is an acoustic jazz quartet engine, fuel-injected with the percussion power of several African Master drummers. Tribaljazz brings a provocative and energetic new voice to the Jazz and Jamband world. Tribaljazz is an experience – it’s a seductive groove, with driving rhythms, that draws a wide eclectic audience – from Jazz aficionados and Classic rockers, to cutting edge Jamband followers without age or demographic limits.

June 6th-7th “JOHN PIZZARELLI” (Show $35, Dinner & Show $80)

Newest CD: “Generations” (Arbor, 2008) with father Bucky Pizzarelli

Last CD: “Dear Mr. Sinatra” (Telarc, 2006)

Fact: John wrote the song “The Wonder Of It All” and

performed it in the original commercials for Foxwoods Casino.

On the Radio: John hosts a syndicated radio show ‘Radio Deluxe with John Pizzarelli.’

Website: http://www.johnpizzarelli.com

John Pizzarelli, is one of today’s most celebrated performers delivering popular standards to a whole new generation. So his latest project “Dear Mr. Sinatra” is a natural progression in a storied career that  includes highly acclaimed tributes to Nat ‘King’ Cole and Antonio Carlos Jobim. His new CD,Dear Mr. Sinatra,” pays homage to Frank Sinatra, perhaps the greatest entertainer of all time, and focuses on songs that were specifically written for “Ol’ Blue Eyes.” Early in his career Pizzarelli opened for Mr. Sinatra on tour. His father, the jazz guitar legend Bucky Pizzarelli, played on many of Sinatra’s seminal recordings. “Dear Mr. Sinatra” is in many ways the most personal of all the Sinatra tributes available and features the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra.

“Dear Mr. Sinatra,” the singer and guitarist’s first-ever Sinatra album, follows Pizzarelli’s highly-acclaimed tributes to Nat “King” Cole (“Dear Mr. Cole” and “P.S. Mr. Cole), Antonio Carlos Jobim (“Bossa Nova”) and The Beatles (“John Pizzarelli Meets The Beatles”). “Frank has always been one of my main musical influences. I love the way he transforms himself from song to song,” John comments. “In the early 1990s, I was honored to open for him with my quartet in Europe and around the states. Frank would appear in the wings during our final number, swinging and clapping and smiling. He would come onstage and cheer for us. It was an honor to play with him and we were thrilled he enjoyed our music.”

John Pizzarelli has been impressing audiences for over 25 years by singing classic standards and late-night ballads, and by playing sublime and inventive guitar. His cool jazz flavor has made him one of the prime revivalists of the great American songbook. On television he is recognized from national appearances on “The Tonight Show,” “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” and in the famous commercials for Foxwoods Casino. He has appeared in films like The Out-Of-Towners with Steve Martin and Goldie Hawn and has been seen on performance stages from Radio City Music Hall to the Hollywood Bowl to festivals around the globe. He has been heard, of course, on numerous recordings and now on his nationally syndicated radio program, Radio Deluxe with John Pizzarelli, for which he’s interviewed such stars as Tony Danza, Liza Minnelli and Regis Philbin.

RADIO DELUXE WITH JOHN PIZZARELLI, the new syndicated radio show which launched recently on stations around the country, explores the Great American Songbook in a fun, fresh new way. John co-hosts with Jessica Molaskey, his wife, singing partner and foil – think of a singing Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy or a swinging George Burns and Gracie Allen. Bringing warmth, humor and that long-lost “live” feel back to radio, the show takes place in their “deluxe living room” and the conversations are relaxed, candid, and off-the-cuff. The show features “live” performances of their favorite songs and spontaneous, hilarious conversations with today’s top performers like Tony Bennett, Diana Krall and Stacey Kent, plus drop-ins from stars like Regis Philbin, Liza Minnelli and Tony Danza. They also play recordings by the icons of classic pop and jazz like Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee and Mel Tormé, as well as recordings by the new stars of the genre like Michael Bublé, Jane Monheit and Peter Cincotti.

JuneJune June 10th-11th “BRIAN CLUBERTSON” (Show $32, Dinner & Show $77)

New CD:Bringing Back the Funk,” (GRP Records, 4/08)

Website: http://www.brianculbertson.com

You've heard of the Ohio Players. Brian Culbertson is the Chicago Player - a keyboardist, trombonist, writer, arranger, producer and the most exciting live performing instrumentalist on the scene today. The proof is all over his milestone tenth project, “Bringing Back The Funk,” a historic and completely unprecedented revisiting to the land of the sho' nuff uncut `70s-style funk of ages. The "historic" declaration is not hype - for the first time ever, legendary old school funk masters from nearly every signature soul band and region of the country have united under Brian and executive producer Maurice White (founder of Earth Wind & Fire) to once again lay the righteous and real stuff on a deeply needy world. Here’s the line-up

William "Bootsy" Collins and Phelps "Catfish" Collins plus members of the Rubber Band and the Horny Horns (all out of Parliament-Funkadelic), Larry Graham (of Sly & The Family Stone and his own Graham Central Station), Larry Dunn and Sheldon Reynolds (of Earth Wind & Fire), Greg Adams (from Tower of Power), Tony Maiden and Bobby Watson (of Rufus), Michael Bland, Cora Dunham and Rhonda Smith (from Prince's bands), solo stars Ray Parker Jr., David T. Walker, Ronnie Laws, Gerald Albright, Tom Scott, Paul Jackson Jr., Perri and many more L.A. session greats as well as neo soul stars Ledisi and Musiq Soulchild.

"I've wanted to record an album like this for many years," Culbertson states with pride - "one where I could really cut loose." Consisting of six original compositions and four classic `70s jams, “Bringing Back the Funk” turned what would have been a "mission: impossible" for others into a mission most righteously accomplished – with everyone recording together live in the studio….the way they used to get down!” Upon completion of the project, Maurice White himself declared, "This record is gonna touch the souls of people because it's musicians playing together and sharing a feeling."

Inspired by his father, music educator Jim Culbertson, Brian Culbertson has been a fast and fierce study of music, gravitating to all styles of dynamic music as long as it was expertly played by artists ranging from Chicago, David Sanborn and Sting to The Brecker Brothers and Maynard Ferguson. Since his 1994 debut “Long Night Out,” Brian has been credited with bringing a youthful yet no less masterful energy to popular instrumental music with hit albums and singles. His sixth album “Nice & Slow” (2001) topped Billboard's Contemporary Jazz chart for six weeks straight. And its follow-up, “Come on Up” (2003) included his blazing cover of Earth Wind & Fire's "Serpentine Fire," impressing Maurice White enough to want to work with him.

June 12th-13th “HIROMI’S SONICBLOOM” (Show $25, Dinner& Show $70)                                             CD:Beyond Standard” (Telarc, 6/08)

Band Personnel: Hiromi-piano/keyboard; Tony Grey-bass; Martin Valihora-drums; and

Dave “Fuze” Fiuczynski-guitar

Website: http://www.hiromimusic.com

Hiromi’s supergroup, Sonicbloom, has shattered the formula of making records written solely by the celebrated pianist/composer. Their latest outing, “Beyond Standard”  finds Tony Grey (bass), Martin Valihora (drums), and Dave “Fuze” Fiuczynski (guitar and otherworldly sounds) assisting Hiromi in crafting unique versions of familiar tunes such as Gershwin’s “I Got Rhythm,” Rodgers & Hammerstein’s “My Favorite Things” and even Jeff Beck’s “Led Boots.”

The group has been recognized for its energetic virtuosity by music industry and mainstream publications alike: Downbeat, JazzTimes, Keyboard, and The New York Times. Playing festivals such as Glastonbury, Fuji Rock, and Playboy Jazz proves that Hiromi’s unique fusion nuevo has been accepted in the world of jazz as well as rock. “Beyond Standard is a showcase for Hiromi and her band’s abilities, with each player getting plenty of room to shine.

Hiromi Uehara first mesmerized the jazz community with her 2003 Telarc debut, “Another Mind.” The buzz started by her first album spread all the way back to her native Japan, where “Another Mind” shipped gold (100,000 units) and received the Recording Industry Association of Japan’s (RIAJ) Jazz Album of the Year Award. The keyboardist/ composer’s second release, “Brain,” won the Horizon Award at the 2004 Surround Music Awards, Swing Journal’s New Star Award, Jazz Life’s Gold Album, HMV Japan’s Best Japanese Jazz Album, and the Japan Music Pen Club’s Japanese Artist Award (the JMPC is a classical/jazz journalists club). “Brain” was also named Album of the Year in Swing Journal’s 2005 Readers Poll. In 2006, Hiromi won Best Jazz Act at the Boston Music Awards and the Guinness Jazz Festival’s Rising Star Award. She also claimed Jazzman of the Year, Pianist of the Year and Album of the Year in Swing Journal Japan’s Readers Poll for her 2006 release, “Spiral.” Hiromi continues her winning streak with the 2007 release of “Time Control” and in 2008, “Beyond Standard.”

June 18th “SOPHIA BILIDES” (Show $20, Dinner & Show $65) one show 8pm

New CD:Hearts Desire” (2008)

Band Personnel: Sophia Bilides-vocals; Doug Hammer-piano

Accolades: 2005 IRNE Award Winner for Best Female Cabaret Performer (Independent Reviewers Of New England), and a 2007 MAC Award Nominee (Manhattan Association of Cabarets and Clubs).

Website:  http://www.sophiabilides.com

Cabaret vocalist Sophia Bilides, accompanied by Doug Hammer on piano, will celebrate the release of her new CD, “Heart’s Desire” with a preview show at Scullers Jazz Club in Boston on Wednesday, June 18. Inspired by Dave Frishberg’s lyrics of the title song, which has been a favorite of Sophia’s for years, she decided to assemble a list of songs expressing various hopes, wishes, and dreams, “meaningful to me,” she says, “but really, the subjects are universal: the desire for home, adventure, romance, lasting love, the ability and courage to spread your wings, seize the day, and live your life to the fullest.”

It was only after she had finalized her song choices for the show and CD that she also realized every song had been written within the last 40 years, which is young in terms of the American Songbook, with some works written as recently as a few years ago. “I’ve devoted much of my career to the songs of Cole Porter, Carolyn Leigh, and Comden and Green, but I’ve also spent the past several years discovering and delighting in a whole new world of songwriting that is just as skilled, witty, and tuneful. I chose these songs simply because I wanted to sing them, but a nice perk is the realization that the American song is alive and quite well in the hands of contemporary songwriters.”

Bilides’ own heart’s desire includes the joy of discovering lesser known songs that fully deserve the spotlight, and reveling in wide-ranging musical options, from quiet jazz ballads, thoughtful folk tunes and artful concert songs, to narrative cabaret pieces, musical theater adventures, and comic novelty numbers. “It all comes under the entertainment umbrella of what I call current music for adults, with an emphasis on the lyrics and the story” Bilides says. The lyricists to be represented include Alan & Marilyn Bergman, Francesca Blumenthal, Leslie Bricusse, John Bucchino, Craig Carnelia, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Mike Craver, Dave Frishberg, Babbie Green, Marcy Heisler, Steven Lutvak, Joni Mitchell, Stephen Schwartz, Michael Smith, Stephen Sondheim, John Wallowitch, and Maury Yeston.

Bilides is the 2005 IRNE Award Winner for Best Female Cabaret Performer (Independent Reviewers of New England), and a 2007 MAC Award Nominee (Manhattan Association of Cabarets and Clubs). She appears regularly at Scullers Jazz Club, and she has also performed at The Regattabar in Cambridge and Danny’s Skylight Room in New York. She is described as “delightfully eclectic, highly polished, mesmerizing, and a comic tour de force” by Cabaret Scenes Magazine, and her shows are frequently listed in Best Of Boston cabaret reviews: “Bilides spins gold; she can belt, lilt, swing, and serve up shtick or heart upon command; sharply comic, touchingly dramatic, hitting her intended mark every time” (Bay Windows).

Her most recent CD "Winter Warm" was chosen as one of the Top Ten CDs of 2007 (alongside Ann Hampton Callaway and Barbara Lea) by Cabaret Hotline Online: “Equal to any of the finest cabaret artists in the country today, Bilides consistently renders a brilliant performance in her material, stage presence, cello-like vocals, and intelligent wit.”

June 19th-20th ACOUSTIC ALCHEMY” (Show $25, Dinner & Show $70)

New CD: “This Way” (Blue Note Records, 2007)

Band Personnel: Greg Carmichael-founder/guitar; Miles Gilderdale-guitar; Terry Disley –piano; Snake Davis-sax; Fred White-keyboards and trumpet;  Julian Crampton-bass and Greg Grainger (drums)

Websitehttp://www.acousticalchemy.com

With the release of “This Way,” Acoustic Alchemy’s first album under Higher Octave/Narada Jazz’s association with Blue Note Records, guitarists Greg Carmichael and Miles Gilderdale celebrate a remarkable two decades since 1987’s Red Dust and Spanish Lace established the British ensemble as an ever evolving, powerhouse force in contemporary jazz.

Their thousands of fans around the world may be feeling nostalgic, but the duo—while keeping their trademark acoustic guitar synergy front and center—is clearly committed to forging ahead, following the laid back pop-soul vibe of “American/English” (2005) with their most aggressive and swinging, hard rocking and artfully jazzy disc to date. Complementing performances by familiar Acoustic Alchemy recording and touring members Terry Disley (piano), Snake Davis (sax), Fred White (keyboards and trumpet), Julian Crampton (bass) and Greg Grainger (drums) are special guest appearances by smooth jazz stars, trumpeter Rick Braun, saxman Jeff Kashiwa (who has toured with the band and appeared on 2001’s Aart) and keyboardist Neil Cowley, a member of jazz groove band (and Narada Jazz/Blue Note labelmates) Down To The Bone.

While Carmichael and Gilderdale composed the majority of the songs and produced several tracks at Gilderdale’s home facility 9 Miles High Studio in York, England, others were produced at various studios on Carmichael’s home turf of London and at Hansa House Studios in Bonn, Germany, where many of the band’s classics were recorded, produced and mixed over the years by longtime associate Klaus Genuit. In addition to Genuit’s three tracks, “This Way includes six others produced and engineered by Richard Bull, who began working with AA on 2000’s “The Beautiful Game.” Two tracks, the trippy and sensual “Out of Nowhere” and the snappy, neo-soul driven “Now I’m On My Way” were mixed by legendary mixer Steve Hodge (Usher, Janet Jackson, Mary J. Blige).

Carmichael explains the very loose and spirited feeling of This Way as the result of a natural chemistry he’s developed with Gilderdale over the years since Gilderdale—formerly a backing guitarist with the band—became Carmichael’s full partner after the passing of founding member Nick Webb in 1998 and the release that year of Positive Thinking.

“What I love about ‘This Way’ is that it’s got so much more playing on it than we’ve done before,” he says, “a lot more soloing and a really relaxed and organic vibe. I think this is less by design and more due to the fact that Miles and I are great friends who are very comfortable and laugh a lot together. When we got together at his place, either one of us would come up with a starting idea and we’d just let it grow naturally, then refine it and change it until we had a great song,” When I think of tracks like ‘Egg,’ which has a very British, straight ahead sound, I realize that this is really the jazziest record we’ve ever made, less pop jazz and with more extended solo sections. Our fans might be surprised to hear Miles play so much electric guitar, but in essence, that’s what he is by trade and what his focus was before he joined me as a partner on The Beautiful Game. So this album is the best of everything, not just my way, not just his way, but ‘This Way.’”

Acoustic Alchemy’s rich legacy is based on the extraordinary airplay, sales and critical reception given the many early Nick Webb-Greg Carmichael led recordings followed by those helmed later by Carmichael and Gilderdale. Carmichael with each successive recording is carrying on a legacy begun by Webb and a guitarist named Simon James in the early 80s; those early recordings were collected for the 1992 collection Early Alchemy.

The road to instrumental stardom began when Webb and Carmichael provided the one-off-in-flight entertainment for a Virgin Airlines England to America flight, in search of an elusive recording contract; they often liked to say they “played their way to America”. Signed to the MCA Master Series label by Tony Brown, their popularity took off in conjunction with the rise of the New Adult Contemporary radio format.

Acoustic Alchemy’s early MCA albums—starting with Red Dust and Spanish Lace and continuing with 1988’s Natural Elements and 1989’s Blue Chip—were all later re-released on GRP. One of the band’s most remarkable recordings was 1996’s live in the studio date Arcanum, which featured new arrangements of classics, a few new tracks, and full orchestration. Recorded over three days at Pinewood Film Studios in England (home to all the James Bond films), the sessions were filmed by director Aubrey Powell for a television documentary of the band, released on video as Best Kept Secret; GRP re-released this on DVD in July 2006 with extra archived live performance and documentary footage. In 2002, Acoustic Alchemy also released Sounds of St. Lucia, a CD/DVD live concert package based on a performance recorded by BET television.

June 25th  “DAVE KOZ” (Show $40, Dinner & Show $85)

New CD: “At the Movies” CD&DVD Capitol Records 1/08

On the High Seas: The Dave Koz & Friends Annual Cruise

Appearances: Dave performed on the 50th Annual GRAMMY Awards telecast on CBS earlier this year,

Accolades: Six time Grammy nominee

Website: http://www.davekoz.com

Six-Time Grammy Nominee Dave Koz makes his only Boston area appearance this year at Scullers Jazz Club. Koz, who performed on the 50th Annual GRAMMY Awards telecast on CBS earlier this year, will be playing songs from the Grammy-nominated “At the Movies,” spent eight weeks at #1 on Billboard's Contemporary Jazz chart last year. Dave's latest work, “At the Movies,” showcases the timeless melodies from American and foreign cinema. Produced by the legendary Phil Ramone, and accompanied by full orchestra, the album features special guest performances by India.Arie, Anita Baker, Chris Botti, Barry Manilow, Johnny Mathis, Donna Summer and Vanessa Williams. The album also includes six stunning instrumentals showcasing Koz's interpretations of the themes from Casablanca, Schindler's List, Cinema Paradiso, Pink Panther and Summer Of '42 as well as an exuberant rendition of "Over The Rainbow" that leads off with a sample of Judy Garland's unforgettable vocal.

With “At The Movies,” Dave has turned to one of his favorite pastimes for inspiration and the result is a lush, inspired collection of twelve timeless movie themes, underscoring the crucial role music plays in film, making it a must-have album for music and film lovers everywhere.

Dave will also be playing hits and fan favorites from his extensive catalogue, which includes the
gold-certified “Lucky Man,” “The Dance,” which was also certified Gold and contained five Top 5 contemporary jazz hits, and “Saxophonic,” which produced another four Top 5 singles and garnered Koz two Grammy nominations spanning
two consecutive years.

In a career spanning nearly two decades, Dave Koz has established himself as a platinum-selling artist, humanitarian, entrepreneur, radio host, and instrumental music advocate. As the recipient of six Grammy® nominations, the list of artists who Koz has played with bears testament to his talent and includes such musical luminaries as Burt Bacharach, Ray Charles, Natalie Cole, Celine Dion, Kenny Loggins, U2, Michael McDonald, Luther Vandross, and Rod Stewart.

Born and raised in L.A.'s San Fernando Valley, Koz initially picked up the saxophone to gain entry into his big brother's band. What began as a ploy became a lifelong obsession. Years later, after earning his degree in mass communications from UCLA, Koz decided to become a professional musician. Within weeks of that decision, he was recruited as a touring member of Bobby Caldwell’s band. It was during this time that Koz befriended keyboardist Jeff Lorber, who invited Koz to come play on one of his tours. That stint was followed by a fourteen-month tour with pop singer Richard Marx.

Signed to Capitol Records by Bruce Lundvall, Koz released his self-titled solo debut album in 1990.  This was the first in a body of best-selling work, which includes the gold-certified “Lucky Man” (1993), “Off the Beaten Path” (1996), and the holiday-themed albums “December Makes Me Feel This Way” (1997) and “Dave Koz & Friends - A Smooth Jazz Christmas” (2001). His gold-certified fifth album, “The Dance” (1999), spawned no less than five Top 5 contemporary jazz hits. “Saxophonic” (2003) produced another four Top 5 singles and garnered Koz two Grammy nominations spanning two consecutive years.

June 26th “TIERNEY SUTTON” (Show $25, Dinner & Show $70)

Latest CD:On the Other Side” (Telarc, 2007)

Accolades:  The Tierney Sutton Band have received a Grammy Nomination for Best Vocal Jazz Album, a JazzWeek Award for Vocalist of the Year, & consecutive nominations for Jazz Journalist Association Awards
Band Personnel:
Tierney Sutton-vocals;  Christian Jacob-piano; Trey Henry-bass, and Ray Brinker-drums

 Website: http://www.tierneysutton.com

During its 14 years together, the Tierney Sutton Band has received a Grammy Nomination for Best Vocal Jazz Album, a JazzWeek Award for Vocalist of the Year, consecutive nominations for Jazz Journalist Association awards, recorded several CDs that made the #1 spot on jazz radio playlists, and garnered critical praise throughout the world. Comprised of vocalist Tierney Sutton and instrumental virtuosos Christian Jacob, Trey Henry, Kevin Axt and Ray Brinker, the band has headlined in recent years at Carnegie Hall, The Hollywood Bowl and Jazz at Lincoln Center and has appeared at the Monterey, Marciac and Umbria jazz festivals.

In a world of overnight sensations, jazz vocalist Tierney Sutton’s success has come from the road less traveled. A decision in the mid ’90s to move to Southern California from her New England home resulted in a decade-long collaboration with her current band mates. A Wisconsin-born choir girl, unexposed to jazz until college, Tierney eventually found the best of the best—collaborators with their own impressive jazz pedigrees, from Natalie Cole to Diana Krall, from Ray Charles to Randy Brecker—pianist Christian Jacob, bassists Trey Henry and Kevin Axt, and drummer Ray Brinker. Ten years and six critically acclaimed CDs later, Tierney and her band demonstrate what collective consultation and dedicated teamwork can achieve. Reviewers repeatedly say that audiences experience a rare and powerful harmony, achieved by humble performers at the top of their game. The road less traveled in an impatient world.

Educated at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Tierney became a semi-finalist in the Thelonious Monk Jazz Vocal Competition in 1998. Her first solo CD, “Introducing Tierney Sutton”(1999), was released to rave reviews and nominated for a 1999 Indie Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album.

In 2000, Tierney signed with the Telarc Jazz label. Since then she has gone on to release seven critically acclaimed/chart topping recordings culminating with her 2007 Telarc release “On the Other Side.

March 18 The MANHATTANS feat. GERALD ALSTON & BLUE LOVETT” (Show $38, Dinner & Show $83)

Big Hits: “Kiss & Say Goodbye”, “Shining Star” & “There's No Me without You

Accolades: 1980 Grammy Award for “Shining Star

Rhythm and Blues Hall of Fame Inductees

Personnel: Gerald Alston-lead vocalist, Blue Lovett-bass vocalist, Troy May– tenor, David Tyson-tenor

Website: http://www.kissandsaygoodbye.com

The Manhattans, members of the Rhythm and Blues Hall of Fame, were originally Winfred "Blue" Lovett, Richard Taylor, Kenny Kelley, George "Smitty" Smith and Sonny Bivins. Blue and Smitty were out front as the group's strong lead singers. Blue was also the group leader and an outstanding songwriter whose compositions with producer Joe Evans gave the group a string of hits on Carnival Records during the mid 1960s.

In the fall of 1970, Gerald Alston, whose style paid homage to the legendary Sam Cooke took over as lead singer. Alston's addition enabled the group to break out of their mold as "doo-woppers" and achieve major national success with the love song "A Million To One."

The Manhattans’ string of hit ballads in the ‘70s included "There's No Me Without You," "We Never Danced To A Love Song," "Feels so Good” and "Kiss And Say Goodbye,” a platinum selling #1 pop and R&B hit in 1976.

In 1977, the group performed at President Jimmy Carter's Inaugural Ball and since then have received their share of platinum and gold singles, albums, and other industry kudos; most notably a 1980 Grammy for "Shining Star.”

In the late 80s, group members were pursuing individual interests within the industry. With their 30th anniversary approaching in 1994, it was the perfect time to reunite.  However it would be ten years later, in 2004, on the eve of their 40th anniversary they would release their first studio album in 15 years featuring the beautiful ballad "Turn Out The Stars" which became one of the year's best songs.
