CD Title: Rhodesmode
Song Title: A Closer View
Record Label: Rhodesmodes
Style: Acid Jazz
A Closer View - Real Audio
Track Description: Rhodesmode is the first release in what promises to be first of many for multi-instrumentalist Perry Hemus. What rhodesmode aims to do is to provide the listener with a unique collection of jazz idiums and styles.
At first, I was taken aback with the sound, it was almost like a chill out CD but the more I listened the better it sounded. Perry seems to encapsulate the summer sound from the off. It's a blend of the most eclectic styles of music your likely to hear moving from soul, jazz to latin fusion through to ambient and deep house. It's the sort of CD that you find yourself lying in your pad thinking of sun-drenched beaches and lazy afternoons. Track 1, A closer view is 8 minutes of fender rhodes bliss and moves straight to another of the strongest tracks on the album shifting seasons which is a beautiful horn led fusion track, then the pharoah-esque Abstractions which sounds very eastern. Next up is orbiting which reminds me of spacial soul jazz from 70s. The stand out track is Rhodesmode which is a floor filling Nu-jazz track which has haunting string drenched riff running through it. The album continues to move through the gears surprising you at every turn. The emphasis of the album is not on the mix but the melding of eclectic styles. The album closes with peacemaker which leaves you with images of brasilian guitars on the sand and cool drinks under sweeping palms.
A real surprise for me but one which I'm pleased to have reviewed. This is an album that has to be discovered over 60 minutes so don't expect a quick fix as your getting ready to go out. Reserve an hour and see what I mean.

As It Is - Real Audio
Track Description: Out of the plethora of Pat Metheny Group albums that have been released, Speaking Of Now has been one of the most widely anticipated. This is undoubtedly due to many factors: the signifcant addition of a distinct new generation of players (Richard Bona, Antonio Sanchez and Cuong Vu), the marker in the timeline of the Group's existence as one of the most acclaimed ensembles of its time, and the expectations of legions of fans who have accompanied the PMG on its long journey (some since inception). - Fred Gerantab

Tekke - MP3
Track Description: Prod is principally a producer of electronic music but is not adverse to throwing a bit of sax playing into the mix. This is a fairly unique jazz jungle tune which twists and turns around a catchy little hook with shades of that squarepusher thing reering its head. Try me, I'm small file and will be here very soon.

CD Title: Third Eye
Song Title: Body & Soul
Record Label: Fresh Sound New talent

Body & Soul - MP3
Track Description: Jazz saxophonist Phil Stockli has given the old classic "Body & Soul" a new face with a tricky arrangment in 15/4 time. Eventhough the melody and the harmony stay more or less the same - at least for the A section - Phil has changed the groove of the ballad and made an uplifting 6/8 type feel Latin beat. In the bridge, the band shifts into double time and the melody doesn't remind us of the original at all.
The tune also serves as a blowing vehicle for saxophonist Stockli and guitarist Mike Moreno, as well as for Bassist Matt Penman.

King Neptune - MP3
Track Description: Saxophonist Phil Stockli's "King Neptune" is basically a 3/4 jazz waltz with an energetic 7/4 interlude. The melody is beautifully arranged between alto, flute and guiar and reminds of the mysterious powers of the God of the Sea, Neptune. Drummer Jeff Ballard is the driving force behind the fiery solos of Stockli and guitarist Moreno.

Source Nature - MP3
Track Description: Jazz saxophonist Phil Stockli's "Source Nature" is an example how odd meters can be used in a composition in a very natural organic way. The tune shifts from a 7/8 to a 5/8 to a 4/4 Samba. Check out the way sax and voice complement each other in playing the melody.

Babalou - MP3
Track Description: "Babalou" is composed by Swiss saxophonist Phil Stockli. Its instrumentation - sax backed by synth and Rhodes, on top of a guitar-bass riff, has an interesting oriental flavour. The straight groove is laid out by drummer Jeff Ballard and Bassist Matt Penman, while pianist Pete Rende impresses with his funky Rhodes.
