When your hot, your hot! Hasselbach & co. have proffered a fine potpourri of standards, et al for our instruction. I note the melodic & rhythmically relaxed interplay between all the players, as they seductively interpret their covers with a dynamic yet modern jazz style. The vitality of this CD defines the raw energy in which it was created, characterized by the combined group’s creative continuity. Keep on goin’ on guys!

Rite away we hear O’Farrill’s pianistic prowess jump out at us from the depths of his Project. His remarkably mature, even, & uplifting pianistic style enhances his subtle yet varied use of interesting jazz harmony, while he employs the full range of his instrument to complement his sidemen. This is a guy who will test us with sensitive, harmonic changes & florid melodic accents. I don’t think I overstate my case when I say that Arturo is a contemporary role model for the modernist school of jazz piano. I offer you Arturo’s very personal, disciplined, & versatile keyboard style, equating it to the resonant tone & firm rhythmic sense of another fine jazz pianist, one Herbie Hancock.

Dialogues indeed! It takes a lot of guts & talent to put your artistry on the line, under the guise of a sax & jazz piano duo. It holds up well, thank you in the capable hands of these two journeyman performers. Both Liebman & Markowitz complement themselves with their exploratory solo work & attendant witty melodic & harmonic commentary. It's all here: Playful fills, interesting countermelodies, & a wondrous tightly knit interaction borne of two consummate jazz artists. The project abounds with a polyphonic liberty, a precise articulation, & most important, a clarion tone.

With a panoply of some top national journeymen jazzers, reedman Ron Blake embarks on his musical sojourn for our edification. Gifted with a smooth silky intonation, Blake offers us his raw soulful music & song. That said, Blake can take us through the rhythmically aggressive & the harmonically complex as well. Blake's virtuosity does not come at us @ the expense of any emotional intensity or expressiveness. On the contrary, his crafted incisive improvisations challenge us.

Jazz pianist Bob Rodriguez & his group know what to do with tempo, i.e. ''ad-lib,'' ''Rubato'' et al. The nuance of ''outside'' & ''tension'' apply, as Bob interprets some very solid standards. I call attention in particular to his ethereal take of the great standard, ''Spring Is Here.'' We are held captive to his musical definition of the song. Rodriguez's piano solo style is angular yet dissonant. He delivers his music with a presence that is almost speech-like in intonation. Rodriguez & his group offer us a wealth of gifted ideas for our instruction. Bravo Bob!!

The latino musical culture has many wonderful & varied nuances, exemplified by this Pablo Ziegler-Quique Sinesi-esque clutch of keen, ethereal originals penned by Ziegler. The disc will delight the sensibilities of any diehard latino jazz aficionado. Pablo writes with an 'urgent' style which (I feel) will prove to be his forte' in CD projects to follow featuring his original compositions. I don't mean to offer my views in any presumptuous manner.........But, I relegate my readers to the positive 'gypsy' influences Pablo has offered in the vernacular of 'Django' or, something maybe 'Grappelli' might have interpreted or written. My point here is that Pablo could have easily (In the past) given these two musical giants his music to record, & I think both Django & Grappelli would emerge edified by Pablo's art. Last, this CD is a confident & new direction in original music, & might I add, it's timely as well.

Jazz pianist, educator, & composer Earl MacDonald has assembled six extremely talented players, gifted in the art of expressing jazz with his current CD effort. 'Echoes In The Night.' The overall artistic contour of the disc is as smooth as it gets for the bebop idiom...........All accented by unexpected counterpoint, & tons of interesting rhythmic variety. I sense an attempt by the group to create a hybrid jazz form. If I'm on the right track, I feel their pursuit is a worthy goal. Last, may I say that the group's extemporaneous musical expression of ideas, emotions, and their life experiences are exemplified quite well in the delivery of their total musical offering.

Poignant, animated, challenging, experimental, kickin,' defiant, moving, vital, seasoned.........And, this is only howI felt as I heard the 1'st kick-off tune. West coast jazz guitarist Richard Arnold displays a prodigious talent indeed, with his advanced sense of harmonics............His solid chord changes, his interesting runs, his sense of chromatics, his wonderfully executed clusters.........All in all, a project delivered in the spirit of an extensive study in collective improvisation.

Bordering on the matrix of fusion & bebop, jazz sax-xer Chris Greene & his group proffers a subtle but complex blend of acoustic & electronic sounds..........Underscored by the group's vital & invigorating rhythmic energy. The music is an interesting organic synthesis of bebop & rock.........Expanded & enriched by a repertory of jazz & fusion. All in all, Greene's project is charged & inventive, & may I offer that the group's success..........Will be sustained by it's hard rhythmic musical drive force.

Jazz piano & vocals.....This where the rubber meets the road. There's nowhere to hide.......Everything is bared!! However, in thehands of such jazz piano stature & prowess, vocalist Kimberly Kaye uses jazz pianist Don Scaletta's musical platform to express her choice of great standards with an appropriate panache. Kudos too, to the recording studio who mixed, mastered, & helped produce such a fine proponent of The American Songbook. The harmonic textures created by the interaction of Kim in the capable hands of Scaletta gives the project a light, airy, & traditional pop-jazz feeling, providing an effective contrast to other congruent vocal projects that offer similarity to this relaxed CD project.
