This weekend (July 24 & 25), trumpeter and composer Mark Rapp and his NY-based band will come back for a second year in a row bringing his original sounds of contemporary/modern Jazz to Florence, Alabama at the 28th annual WC Handy Festival. Past festivals have had such greats as Dizzy Gillispie, Take6, Henry Butler, Ellis Marsalis and more and Rapp duly notes, "I'm very excited to be back south and honored to play such a highly regarded festival."

One event Rapp is looking forward to is giving a music clinic for the C.I.T.Y. Program (Community Intensive Treatment for Youth) on Friday morning. Rapp says, "This is one of the main reasons I work so hard at playing music - to have the opportunity to encourage and inspire people of all ages to arise to the occasion, find happiness in the journey and to achieve their dreams."

The C.I.T.Y. Program is a group of teachers and counselors who work daily with court-appointed youth to provide academic remediation, intensive therapeutic intervention, physical education, and transitional follow-up into the world of college or work.

Later that Friday, the Mark Rapp Group will be a part of the Riverside Jazz concerts in McFarland Park and on Saturday, MRG will present an up-close-and-personal concert in the Zodiac theatre.

"One can't help but sense a distinct identity to Rapp in both his composing and playing... and for this reason, we will be hearing a lot more from him." Jazz Improv NY Magazine

The Mark Rapp Group has played sold out shows at the Blue Note (NY), Joe's Pub, Yoshi's (San Fran) and such venues as the JVC Newport Jazz Festival, Dizzy's at Jazz Lincoln Center, JazzTime Festival (Croatia), Jazzland (Vienna), Jazz Standard (NY) and more. Mark was named a "top emerging trumpeter" by Downbeat Magazine, featured on a Travel Channel documentary and has played with Branford Marsalis (see video on his web site) to Hootie and the Blowfish and most recently recorded with Don Braden and Gerald Clayton. His debut record Token Tales is critically acclaimed and being played on radio stations around the globe.

We often don't hear the results of charity efforts, especially those on a grassroots level, but his is an exception. It's a wonderful example of how small efforts really do help.

A HUGE thank you for everyone who was able to attend our performance at the Jazz standard on July 5th! It was an awesome evening all around. We did a GREAT job! To raise over $200 at a jazz gig on a Sunday night on a 4th of July weekend is TREMENDOUS! Thank YOU! - Mark Rapp

And below is a message from Project Sunshine, the charity for whom the Mark Rapp Group raised money that night.

Project Sunshine thanks all of Mark Rapp's fans and supporters for helping raise $207 at his July 5th concert in support of our free programs for children facing medical challenges and their families. Every donation counts, especially during these challenging economic times, and this money will allow Project Sunshine to deliver therapeutic arts and crafts programming to 33 children in need. If you would like to contribute to Project Sunshine and help reach Mark's goal of raising $1,350 towards these impactful and in-demand programs, allowing us to reach 216 children.

A donation of just $10 or $20 will help us reach our goal! Please encourage your friends to donate too and please note on the donation page that your donation is from a Fan of Mark Rapp.

Jazz trumpeter, Mark Rapp, recently recorded his debut effort under the producing prowess of Grammy Winner Jason Olaine (Roy Hargrove, Michael Brecker) and The Roots' engineer Robert "LB" Dorsey who has recently started working with Beyonce and her team.

Mark describes his sound as "...bridging the gap between modern and contemporary jazz music. There's a wide division between the two, both artistically and in the audiences - just go to a Christian Scott gig and then a Chris Botti gig - huge difference. I'm trying to connect the best of both worlds."

Musically, his melodies are memorable and played with passion. Artistically, Mark and his band play with fire and coax the listener into a world of improvisation. Visually, he understands there is much more to a performing art form than sound alone.

Through accessible melodies, stable harmonic structures, solid grooves, honest and raw playing and even by utilizing the earthy sounds of a didgeridoo, Mark engages everyone from the layman to the most hardened critic.

Currently, Mark's record is being mixed and introduced to various labels to find their new home.
