Those of decadent persuasion, the legally minded, a beat poet and sky cruiser, lost in lurve, the redundant, expectant babes, blondes and bearded bohemians, have descended on the Erskineville Bowls Club, Sydney tonight. It's Les Gastronomes' tenth anniversary gig and beery bonhomie abounds as the crowd relax into the mood with some tasty Chinese fare, a couple of keno games and a peek at the footy.

Flashy dames and smooth movers cut a rug, and the bowls club morphs into a glittery boogie wonderland. Who else but this band could get away with such an inspired play list that includes: 'The Girl from Ipanema', 'Wichita Linesman' and ‘Master Blaster’ infused with the Divinyls’ ‘All the boys in town’? Lead singer, Tony Casey is far too modest when he later remarks that some of these toe-tapping concoctions are ‘self-indulgent’.

The mirrorball's a twinkle in Casey's eye, as Les Gastronomes traverse and blend musical genres country, lounge, jazz, funk and, would you believe, Joni Mitchell? Resplendent in evergreen velvet, Casey croons and swoons us through the evening, supported by hot sax, accomplished bass, wicked guitar and energetic drumming. These seemingly laidback gentlemen of soul and science are expert in the arena of slick, well-rehearsed entertainment.

The fun is over all too soon especially for the exhausted drummer, who’s made a surreptitious costume change into a sequined jumpsuit and uses the last of his energy to pounce on the crowd.

Ten years of dirty lounge What a gas!
