Review:

The more the tin whistle makes its way into jazz settings, the more it becomes a permanent fixture, just as has the recorder in the past five years.  It is an amazing instrument.

In the Mel Bay starter kit, the instrument comes in a large plastic case.  The kit includes an MEG tin whistle by Clarke, an Irish tin whistle pocketbook by Patrick Conway, and the book Fun with the Tin Whistle by William Bay.  The Bay book contains a play along CD for instruction.

The small, concise Patrick Conway book can slip into your shirt pocket and is an easy item to have about for quick reference.  The fundamentals of the tin whistle are given, along with a fingering chart, and solos.

The William Bay book is paperback and suitable for a music stand.  The play along CD is helpful, and enjoyable instruction.  Technically, this is a method and song book for D Tin Whistle. For those seeking only an instruction book, this is available for sale separately.

William Bay puts together a fine collection of information for instruction. There is the history of the instrument, going back in time 150 years to when it was devised by a farm worker named Robert Clarke who made the instrument by hand. Notes, rests, solo study work, and various topics are covered in the William Bay book.

An easy to read, hands-on approach, this is an ideal instruction kit for the jazz musician wishing to add this melodic little instrument to his or her instruments for playing.  Well-written, this kit should find a quick home with many jazz musicians who want to master the tin whistle.
