Review:

The first thing you notice about Mel Bay's new Trumpet Method is its hands-on accessibility. Spiral-bound for ease of use, it contains material that will put the would-be jazz trumpet player on the road to success.  This is another fine work written by William Bay, and clearly written with many keen insights.

William Bay's Trumpet Method makes for enjoyable reading.  The photograph revealing parts of the trumpet is most helpful, and if you have ever wondered where the water key and tuning slide of the trumpet is found, this photo shows it! Bay goes on to cover many topics of trumpet playing.  For instance, the information on holding the instrument, placement of the hands, proper sitting position, getting a tone on the trumpet (embouchure), positioning of the lips in the mouthpiece, and care of the trumpet are clearly explained.  Musical notation information is covered along with diverse exercises.  The engaging method makes it easy to come back to often for practice and play.

Special attention is given to time signatures, notes, harmonic modes and melodic modes, minor scales, and syncopation studies.  The old Scott Joplin tune, "Ragtime Dance," on page 73 is an example of the many fun exercises.  Bay examines Contemporary and ragtime styles with great detail.

If you want a basic overview of the trumpet, give this fascinating and accurate book by William Bay a look over.  You won't be disappointed!  Well worth your time and reasonably priced.
