Review: Jay Umble has put together a remarkable and entertaining approach for those interested in blues and jazz guitar. Part of the Mel Bay Guitar University series, this instruction book is detailed and comes with a nice CD for a hands-on touch!
This book is a genuinely innovative teaching method for learning the jazz and blues guitar style, and the step-by-step method definitely does what it is supposed to do. Of the many topics covered, there is special attention given to background vamps, endings, linear concepts, comping, walking bass lines, harmonic form, bar blues, quartal harmony, among others.
What makes this musical instruction book work is the great abundance of helpful, practical examples. These examples are a direct way to inter-relate to the blues and jazz guitar techniques.
If you are looking for something enjoyable, and helpful, give this book by Jay Umble a close examination. I found the book very useful and found section six covering other blues forms accurate and on target. The entire book is accurate and on target, and a good, solid investment.
This book should find a most welcome audience, for it works! Congratulations to Jay Umble for a job well done and to Mel Bay Publishing for making this fine book available to blues and jazz guitarists.
