Even though Foltz is a trombonist, he is not featured in every track of the CD. Foltz has been working on this project since 1996 and has brought together the people that make the mood special. Vocalists Carolyn Leonhart of Steely Dan and Mary Anne Marino bring the right vocal feeling to this project. Kenny Ascher uses both piano and Rhodes piano for a celebral feeling on the four tracks he is featured. Great guitar and Hammond organ work by Gerry Leonard, who also helps Foltz produce some of the release.
Nelson Foltz also wrote six of the tracks on The Longing Hours. The other six tracks were songs that Foltz liked from interesting sources. Since Foltz had experience working in Broadway pit orchestras, he includes I Fall in Love Too Easily, witten by one of Broadway's best writing duos Sammy Kahn and Julie Styne. His solo trombone works well on this song and shows the power of simplicity and heart. Foltz also features Ivan Lins' song Life in the Modern World, which sets the mood for a lonely night.
Sometimes people work for a long time to release a CD that tries to set a specific mood. Some of them work and some of them don't. Nelson Foltz' The Longing Hours hits the mark perfectly. Maybe his expertise working on Broadway showed Foltz how to use music to tell a story. His story of needing someone through the lonely hours of the night hits close to home for some. The Longing Hours will make you wonder just what story Nelson Foltz will tell next.
