There's only one original composition on the disc, Marc Searle's Ascending Truth, but they approach some pretty challenging books to fill out the disc, including selections from Monk, Trane, Miles and Wayne Shorter. A couple of the finer moments include the Rodgers & Hart ballad, Little Girl Blue, and Les McCann's A Little 3/4 For God & Co. (and why don't more people play more Les McCann!).
The McCann tune in particular, both the opening track and the 'alternate take' offered later, is an example of jazz at its most affectingly soulful, although Miles' No Blues offers a compelling case for the same distinction. This is another case, though, where picking and choosing is just beside the point. Set aside the time to dig this one from start to finish. There isn't a disappointing moment.
