Percussion is rarely mentioned by this writer, but I found myself drawn to it on this disc. Rod Jacobs "understands" his role and he does it with class. No overpowering, no unnecessary clutter, everything was done with loving care.
Chuck Jacobs Bass walked along in fine style. His time was on the mark and his ensemble work was felt (pleasantly) on every tune. Randy Dorman's clever intros set the mood for the players, and on the 4 bar exchanges he had his say.
"Summertime" Very sweet Trumpet tone sets the perfect summertime mood..Tasty Guitar solo...The Percussion was understated yet spoke volumes in the background. "Falling In Love With Love" swings and lopes along easily. Nice Flugelhorn effort. "Can't Stop Crying" Dan Jacobs moving solo is a study in mood setting. He weaves a most tender story. "Autumn Leaves"..Clever Guitar intro sets a swinging mood. Again Dan Jacobs reflective side is felt. "Blue Moon" Skips along happily, camaraderie was apparent in this joyful presentation. Nice lazy day Guitar solo. "I Can't Give You Anything But Love" Jump time. Hip fours with everyone contributing.
This recording will be of interest not only to the jazz fan, but the jazz player as well. It is a gem.
