Pacific Standard Time..Live! by Richard Simon

Richard Simon has not only jammed with the King of Thailand, in the company of the estimable Mr. Sam Most, but the Kings of Be-Bop have also been privy to Simon's deft playing. He has recorded with Plas Johnson, Dave Pike, Keely Smith, toured the Far East and the USA extensively.

Sam Most is a jazz legend. A Flautist and Saxophonist of major influence, as well as possessing a vocal style that is not only hip, but infectiously delicious. He has influenced the likes of Paul Horn, Herbie Mann, and James Moody.

Al Viola is an original member of the Page Cavanaugh Trio. Frank Sinatra upon hearing Viola took him to New York to gig at the Waldorf and the Atlantic City Steel Pier. After a 10 week tour with Frank in 1973, he accompanied Sinatra in a performance at the White House. He was a major part of Sinatra's legacy for many years. He has scored such films as "Cool Hand Luke", "West Side Story", "Blazing Saddles and "The Godfather" I might add that he is one magnificent Guitarist.

"Avalon" is highlighted by a delightful musical conversation between the Flute and Guitar, with Simon's Bass walking tall...Viola's solo spoke volumes in its dexterity and ideas.

"It Could Happen To You".. Nice easy going tempo with the big Bass sound of Simon paving the way.

"Route 66"...There is a particular way that a musician sings and it is exemplified by hipness and style. Most's vocals are a study in susurration, with much more depth than say, Chet Baker. The scatting was a cool trip into Bopsville, with Viola's Guitar prompting sweetly, and adding a masterful solo for good measure. Richard Simon's Bass was strutting around and talking up a storm in a manner most apropos to the mood.

"As Time Goes By"..Time didn't go by on this one. It was impeccable. Sam Most's pure jazz vocal was embellished by Viola's imaginative backing and nurturing. Simon again added the final ingredient that sent it into swingsville.

This is a recording that truly satisfies the soul. A real winner.
