The Decider by Benn Clatworthy

Benn Clatworthy is a British tenor saxophonist presently based in L.A. He has a grand tone, deep and luxurious - full and resonating. His recording as a leader on this trio date finds him teamed up with Americans Chris Colangelo holding down the bass lines and Ryan Doyle swinging on drums. The record entitled The Decider is made up of eleven tracks, mostly original Clatworthy compositions. The album takes on a post bop feel reminiscent of early Blue Note days.

"Afternoon In Parris" by John Lewis opens things up with a joyous vibe, a Caribbean feel that swings. A chance for Clatworthy to showcase his melodious tone. A chance for the rhythm section to fill things up with solid bass lines and swinging drums.

The slow paced "Pannonica" a sad ballad that finds Clatworthy playing emotionally vibrant fills, while bass and drums fill in admirably. Colangelo provides a lengthy bass fill that’s quite pleasing.

The Cd The Decider is a balanced mix of up tempo tunes, ballads, some sad and some romantic. The jazz standard "I Get A Kick Out Of You" is performed in a dark somber mood. There are the swinging numbers like Monk’s "Off Minor" classical sounding numbers as in "Tango Sentimental" where Clatworthy plays flute. The title track "The Decider" takes a walk on the wilder side with some outside the box playing. The constant is the bold sounding tone of Clatworthy on tenor sax and his in the pocket rhythm section that is in sync with where he takes the project.
