Original Blues Classics Sampler by Original Blues Classics Sampler
This excellent compilation draws primarily on material recorded for Prestige Records and its subsidiary label Bluesville during the 1950's and 1960's. Also represented here are a number of sides originally released by the legendary Stax and Specialty labels during the same time period, as well as vintage 1920's performances by Blind Lemon Jefferson and Ma Rainey that were originally re-licensed and re-released during the 1950's by Riverside Records. The content relies more heavily on electric blues and more commercially-slanted R&B music such as Little Milton's "If That Ain't A Reason." But there is also plenty of meat for traditional blues fans, including Blind Willie McTell's "The Dyin' Crapshooter's Blues" and a sizzling live version of Muddy Waters' "Honey Bee."The overall sound quality of the release is very good, considering the considerable age and variety of sources used in its production. The CD notes, expertly written by Lee Hildebrand, should fill in most of the details about the tunes on this compilation. This collection should serve anyone well as a good introduction the substantial collection of blues under the control of Fantasy Group and their affiliated labels for a reasonable amount of money.
