Canto Do Rio by Jovino Santos Neto Quinteto

CANTO DO RIO is one of the finest collections of contemporary Brazilian jazz to come along in a long while, each song refreshingly original and performed with much verve. These songs from composer/pianist Jovino Santos Neto are exceptional, and a fine look into contemporary Brazilian jazz.

Every musician on this collection shines and soars with unique solo work. The harmony of the group in performance is perfect. Flora McGill's vocals are a special treat.

There are eleven songs on the CD. Among the imaginative songs are found "Guanabara," "Primavera Em Flor," "Pedra Branca," "Guaratiba," "Sempre Sim," Batuki Di Bangu," "Feira Livre," "Ciranda Chegada," "Ciranda Roda," "Comichao," and "Canto Do Rio." A short but highly creative song is the "Canto Do Rio," worthy of much radio airplay time, as are other songs in the collection.

This collection highlights the talents and musical gifts of all of the performers. Javino Santos Neto has a relaxed, sensitive piano style, innovative and entertaining. If you like contemporary Brazilian jazz, this is one of the finest entries to date. Flawless and enjoyable. Highly recommended.
