After an absence from the recording scene for almost 18 years, one of the original prime movers of the AACM (Chicago's Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, born in the 60s) school is back, and none the worse for wear (he's been playing in the NYC subways for years). McIntyre still retains that rich, bluesy tone, and utilizes an empathetic trio format for his recording comeback. The tunes (all originals) are fractured free-bop - imagine if Don Byas was in Albert Ayler's "Spiritual Unity" trio instead of Ayler. There is a spaciousness to this music, with ak Laff providing most of the rhythmic impetus. McIntyre's tenor achieves a balance between the probing and often volatile sounds of 60s free jazz and a classic Kansas City after-hours-club tone that reaches your gut and your heart. Not exactly easy listening, not a lease-breaker, either. Adventurous listeners will have cause to rejoice in K.M.M.'s return if they try this "Dream ----" on for size.
