"Franz Lehar's, Yours Is My Heart Alone" is an up tempo number showcasing the skills of Rick as he handles this piece with a sense of fun and rhythmic joy. The Dexter Gordon of the guitar in the way he slips in musical quotes to further embellish the piece. Don Gladstone's bass work offers a solid foundation from which to play.
"This I Dig Of You" is a piece from the pen of the great sax player, Hank Mobley. A tricky arrangement which demands concentration and an ear for what is to come. The band works well here. An effort from everyone to solidify the piece and work as a fine tuned instrument unto themselves. Nice drumming from Curtis Boyd.
"Fried Bananas" is probably Dexter Gordon's most well known composition. Again, Rick displays his beautiful style of playing. Never one to waste notes, Rick economizes, as he ventures through this chestnut. I can't help but admire Kenny's playing. It fits so well with what Rick is doing. A great choice for this session.
It seems from this recording that Rick hasn't recorded an album in quite some time. He is such a talented artist deserving wider recognition. Rick's approach to a composition, his tasteful playing style and his work working with a group can only further his exposure to a wider audience. Looking forward to more releases from this talented guitarist.
