Inspiration by Sam Rivers' Rivbea All-Star Orchestra

After a too-long hiatus from recording, multi-reed player/composer Sam Rivers is back with a vengeance! Here, he's at the helm of an orchestra consisting of many of the best cutting-edge players in American jazz. Rivers has been at the forefront of the jazz avant-garde of the 60s & 70s, and time mellows us all a bit - but FIRE is here is abundance! Rivers' thoughtful, knotty compositions swing like mad - if Anthony Braxton and the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra got together after drinking LOTS of coffee! The title track features darting, jabbing ensemble passages and solos that are luminously lyrical. "Rejuvenation" features a whimsically strutting funk-flavored theme and a popping, percolating bass line. The joyous "Beatrice" has rich arrangement that recalls (somewhat) Duke Ellington's early-1970s suites. If you want to hear a modern big band album that has EDGE and fun, mad ABANDON, Inspiration is it.
