Still Picture by Jon Opstad

"Still Picture" introduces the talent of Jon Opstad, 20, a drummer/percussionist/composer from Norway. He has studied clarinet, piano and saxophone at an early age before being drawn to the drums. Opstad has performed as a drummer and percussionist for many local bands while studying music at Cambridge University since 2002.

In addition to his studies, Jon and four student jazz players have united as a group to produce "Still Picture." One of those standout players is Jon Opstad's brother, James Opstad.

The five-track compact disc, "Still Picture," illuminates influences from other jazz greats such as Herbie Hancock, Kenny Wheeler and Jan Garbarek. According to the record label, New Canvas Records, the compositions of "Still Picture" "explore the textual possibilities of the instrumentation, from the combined horns to Ebo'd fretless bas to the title track's layered cello parts, while leaving space for the highly individual soloists." It is a critique well said, as this group produces a contemporary, stellar sound track.
