The Modern Jazz Sextet by The Modern Jazz Sextet

Although short in quantity, this CD scores very highly in quality. Recorded by Norman Granz in 1956, the little session has only 5 tracks and one is a medley.

As most fans are aware, the original Modern Jazz Quartet was formed by members of Dizzy's band. It is reasonable and fortunate that Diz was included in this outstanding session. The trumpet star is at his prime on this recording and as exciting as ever. Sonny Stitt moves from frantic to mellow in his usual manner. His rendering of "Old Folks" is especially touching. Even the generally subdued John Lewis jumps out of his shell and romps up a storm. Charlie Persip proves that he is one of the best bop drummers ever.

This is a truly fine CD and is worthy of a place in your collection.
