Jesse Selengut has a great trumpet tone, his phrasing creates excitement, he blows hot, funky lines, sometimes syncopated, other times, lyrical, pleading riffs that compliment the songs beautifully. The song "Follow," composed by Mr. Selengut displays his versatility, writing and playing, he is assisted by guest artist, tenor saxophonist Donny McCaslin, a fine display of artistry ensues.
The other members of the band contribute on every tune, Daniel Kelly a keyboard player and electronics expert has composed one tune on the album "Doppelganger." The song starts out with a deep bass tone, care of bassist Gavin Fallow, a slow pulse, an intricate electronic piano melody soars through the funeral march, opening a window for an inspired trumpet break to flow in rhythmical harmony while drummer Kyle Struve swings with jubilation and free form motion to end on a sustained cymbal roll.
The album is made up of eight tracks, with fine trumpet playing by Mr. Selengut, a solid and exciting rhythm section, a guest saxophonist - Donny McCaslin, an added bonus on a couple of the tracks. The CD This is Jazz Noir is well worth a listen, contemporary, happening music that will appeal to folks who like listening to good music.
