Time Again by David Sanborn

Saxophonist David Sanborn has done it again. He has come out with a CD that shows just how versatile he is with many types of music. Called time again, his first release on the legendary Verve label, Sanborn presents some of the songs that have influenced him throughout his career. From Harlem Nocturne to Isn't She Lovely Sanborn is in the groove. Each song brings Sanborn's own interpretation into clear focus.

In Harlem Nocturne, Sanborn speeds the song up just a little to get a more contemporary urban feel so that it feels like Harlem in the 21st century. Isn't She Lovely is slowed down enough to make the song a salute to women everywhere instead of just about a child. Sanborn also give a new twist on the 60's great by the Champs Tequila. He give the song a latin twist without going overboard, but stays true to the meaning of having fun.

David Sanborn's time again also shows just how good a song writer he is. In Little Flower, he shows just how it's like to come into the world when it is just you and the world together. Delia brings about a story about how someone can give different signs at different times and it is still hard to figure what is wanted. Spider B., co-written by longtime friend and keyboardist Ricky Peterson, shows Sanborn's knack of doing straight ahead jazz work in a contemporary fashion.

There is a surprise for David Sanborn fans on time again. On four tracks, Sanborn shows his knack for playing the piano. He says that he wanted someone who could play just the way he wanted the piano to sound on the track. What better way to do that than to do it yourself and Sanborn is not that bad on the keys either.

Just as in all Sanborn releases, time again has excellent backup help from not only Ricky Peterson, but other great performers as well. Randy Brecker is featured on trumpet and flugelhorn, Christian McBride on bass, Don Alias and Louis Quintera on percussion, Russell Malone on guitar and Steve Gould on drums. David Sanborn has another hit on his hands that shows just how versatile he is in both contemporary and straight ahead jazz molds. time again is one that you will want to hear time and again.
