Dan Faehnle is perhaps best known for his three years with singer-pianist Diana Krall during which he performed on world tours, television shows, etc. He has also performed on many recordings for other jazz musicians.
Paul Keller leads his own 16-piece jazz big band, The Paul Keller Orchestra, and also a small ensemble and quartet in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He has toured with Diana Krall and Russell Malone and is highly esteemed as both a composer and arranger.
This CD, Trio Con Brio, Live at 8200 Brill, was recorded live at the home of jazz impresario, David Hall, in Cincinnati, Ohio. The album starts with the buoyant track, "Taking A Chance On Love." Minutes into the song you realize what a fantastic trio this is. They cooperate with each other seemingly effortlessly. Keller is especially brilliant on this track with his solo which comes full circle with DeGreg on piano. The artistry is nothing short of spectacular, audible in the production of these seasoned musicians. The next track, "Move," is as superb as the preceding. "NTK" and "Dreamer" are crowd pleasers and are consummately arranged. This trio is able to take the standard "Lover Man" and make it unique to their sound. The mood changes with the next two tracks "Exactly Like You" and "Dreamsville." This change shifts from an upbeat tempo to one that is both unhurried and evocative. The album ends with "Button Up Your Overcoat," "You Stepped Out Of A Dream," "LJK," and "My Shining Hour."
Phil DeGreg, Dan Faehnle, and Paul Keller are consummate musicians. This trio truly radiates talent that is instantly audible from the moment the CD begins to play! This is a must add to your collection. I have no doubt that you will enjoy it immensely as did I.
