Warm Cool by Chris Connor

The world has been waiting for this glorious reissue of Chris Connor's years with Atlantic Records. The two CD package includes a nice booklet with complete personnel but unfortunately ignores the recording dates. Forty tunes by a single artist would seem too much for some collectors but in the case of Chris Connor, I'd like even more. The tunes were chosen by Chris Connor, now 71, and Will Friedwald. They each picked 40 tunes and then got together to narrow it down to 40 in total. There isn't space to list all the songs here but Connor's fans will be relieved to know that "When The Wind Was Green", "Little Jazzbird", "Here's That Rainy Day" and "Misty" have been included.

The musicians are legend. Collectively: Joe Newman, Clark Terry, Eddie Costa, Milt Hinton, Ralph Burns, Ralph Sharon, Jaki Byard, Ronnie Ball, Oscar Pettiford, Harry "Sweets" Edison, Freddie Greene, Maynard Ferguson, Marshall Royal, Frank Rehak, Osie Johnson, Dave Bailey, Rufus Jones, Phil Woods, Barry Galbraith, Joe Puma, George Duvivier, Hank Jones, Jimmy Jones, Wendell Marshall, Ed Shaunessy and Kenny Burrel. I haven't mentioned lesser known names and the string sections. Chris Connor is one of the finest jazz singers of the period. Her choice of material reflects her unfaltering dedication to quality and good taste. The selections are drawn from 12 long play vinyl albums issued by Atlantic. I consider this CD set as an Essential for collectors of 50's & 60's jazz. I hope that "32 Jazz" will be able to continue with wonderful jazz reissues of this quality. Bravo!
