Live by Spring Heel Jack

EFX acolytes, John Coxon and Ashley Wales (Spring Heel Jack) continue their modern/free jazz indulgences with this live release, recorded in England. As the meeting of the minds emerge during these lengthy free-form space jams, including jazz notables, bassist William Parker, keyboardist Matthew Shipp and others.

The septet provides a startling glimpse of freely organized, yet partially antagonistic improvisations, marked by sax great Evan Parker’s circular movements, amongst his band-mates oscillating maneuvers. While drummer Han Bennink keeps this train a movin’ in rather garrulous fashion; equating to a notion that should come as no surprise to many of the Dutchman's fan base. Essentially, the musicians pull out the stops, whether engaging in subtle exchanges and soulful excursions or when venturing into minimalist type territory. On the thirty-nine minute work simply titled "Part II," Bennink’s polyrhythmic attributes come to light in rather prominent fashion via his metronome-like precision, brisk brushwork, and changeable patterns. Whereas, the band reaches a zenith of sorts while tempering the flow down to a near whisper for the finale as the artists render a symphony of sound-sculptures. Perhaps this release, more so than the band’s previous outings for this record label, signals in a new direction for the hybrid jazz-electronics idiom. Strongly recommended....
