Minerva by Satoko Fujii

Satoko Fujii is one of the most exciting and intriguing pianists on the scene today. Whether on her own or with husband Natsuki Tamura, Fujii creates a web of musical exploration that begs repeated listening. Her latest release Minerva is no exception.

Opening with the funky Tamura written number Tatsu Take, Tamura’s punctuated and pursuing effects open the door for Fujii to explore counter rhythms, and odd drum beats. Building along the way is a cascade of notes delivered by Fujii. Constantly probing in and out of time, uncovering new possibilities, is the trademark of this remarkable improviser.

Selvedge begins with a whisper from Fujii Delicate and flowing, Yoshida and Tamura adds subtle effects underneath Fujii to enhance the mood. A joyous reunion of sorts results from each contribution. A synergy full of electricity.

Adding tonal effects and various pianistic percussion, we find Fujii immersed in a sea of gorgeous sound. Caught In A Web but always aware of her location and purpose. Tamura has fun with his trumpet, while Hayakawa and Yoshida tinker with all sorts joyous percussion and bottom end effects. As the intensity builds, Fujii becomes more consumed by the sounds around her, as if she is fighting to escape the web. it’s a battle, a struggle which flows in a mercurial manner.

Satoko Fujii is one of those rare artists who feels comfortable with her music and the people supporting her. Minerva is another in a series of great recordings guaranteed to take you on an unforgettable journey with many surprises along the way.
