Rylickolum: For Your Pleasure by Paul Dunmall - Paul Rogers - Kevin Norton

Drummer/percussionist Kevin Norton aligns his formidable wares with revered British artists; saxophonist Paul Dunmall and bassist Paul Rogers for this live set, recorded in upstate New York. On the first piece "Rylickolum," the trio commences with a whisper, as Norton uses the vibes for a groove that subsidizes the quietly intimidating, chain of events. Here, they seemingly formulate a mutual understanding of what is about to transpire. Simply put, Dunmall and Rogers possess monstrous improvising skills, but it’s all about the band’s sense of oneness. As they inject tonal contrasts into a mix featuring Dunmall’s jabbing flurries, and more. The musicians bustle through a vortex of sinuous ebbs and flows where Norton seamlessly toggles between vibes and the drum kit. Essentially, they craft a multidimensional framework, rooted within scorching free-bop tinged swing vibes and bashing crescendos of sound.

The trio often recycles previously rendered tempos and motifs amid daintily organized movements and keenly visualized shifts in momentum. They explore a hodgepodge of sub-themes via a progression of shrewdly enacted and at times, turbocharged vignettes. Consequently, we wouldn’t expect anything less from these folks. Recommended....
