Almost There by Larry Calland

The third and current offering of musical multiplicity and seasoned adeptness by Conga Jazz entitled "Almost There", is fire!

Conga Jazz is primarily known for their Afro-Cuban rhythm, but their repertoire embraces acid jazz, straight-ahead, fusion, old school - and they do it well! The leader, percussionist Larry Calland, attributes the bands amazing versatility to communication and trust. His compilations and relationship to the artists hand picked to participate in his unique musical experience are plaudits to his resume. Larry explains with the simplicity that characterizes his easy going style: "The ability to articulate the sound you want out of your musicians, then to garner a trust from each musician and integrate your appreciation for each musician's contribution to the complete package, displays itself in the spirit of the final product."

We heard them at the Viva Chicago Festival this past week-end. Unbelievable live performance by this well-kept Midwestern secret!

An excellent sampling of Larry's stylings can also be heard on his first compact disc, "Spirit".
