Cozmopolitan by Jason Miles

Jason Miles has been involved in music for many years. He has recorded with the likes of Miles Davis, Argentinean sax great Gato Barbieri, and Sting to name but a few. His recent discovery of a recording that includes a young bassist by the name of Marcus Miller, guitarist Ricardo Silviera, Michael Brecker and others makes Cozmopolitan all the more special. Recorded between March and May 1979, one can truly call these basement tapes.

Cozmopolitan is a mid tempo number featuring Brecker. Sounding like early Spryo Gyra, one might think it is Jay Beckenstein playing. The bouncy upbeat melody remains throughout. Great for dancing and just plain having a good time.

Kashmirian Twist features Badal Roy's subtle tablas playing behind Brecker and Mile's funky rhythms. This East Indian sounding number is reminiscent of early Weather Report. Brecker's Shorter like lines weave an interesting blend of harmonic development and creativity. Mile's electric piano sound is typical of the time. An aural oasis of sand and sound ensues before the main theme is reintroduced.

Written by drummer Jeff Williams, Gale Warning is another upbeat number featuring not only Brecker, but Williams as well. With solid timing and careful execution, Williams "in the pocket" playing make this tune a worthwhile listen.

A beautiful ballad, Powder features Niewood's delicate flute. Working in and out of the theme, Niewood's improvisations are developmentally pleasing and harmonically rich. Silviera's touch is brief and too the point. Everyone gets a chance to shine on this Miles original. Listen carefully to Miller's tasty rhythmic patterns playing under the theme.

Poetry begins with a soft and lyrical intro from Mile's. The tempo gains momentum with Brecker and the rest of the band riding the melody. Brecker's typical exploratory solo is a beautiful segue to Silviera's guitar. Early on, one can hear that this Brazilian showed great promise.

For those interested in taking a trip back in time when most of these musicians were in the early stages of their musical development, Cozmopolitan is worth exploring. Digitally transferred, remixed and remastered, the spirit of these sessions is evident throughout. Even after all these years.
