Opuscule by François Marcaurelle

Jazz from North of the North American border via Canada? You bet, it's François Marcaurelle and he does have a unique sound to himself and his group.

Track one is entitled Raggae Day and the guitarist Sylvain Provost and Francois on keyboards sound like they are having a grand time in the club recording this one. Sort of a mellow tune with both exchanging their parts in between the bassist and the drummer.

This is François Marcaurelle's' fifth release since '93 and this one was recorded live at L'air du Temps, a legendary Montreal Jazz club.

Notes of the CD from Effendi Records say the music is modern, assured and eloquent. I would say IT'S ALL THAT and a little bit more.

Track three is called Le Pelerin and is soft and cuddly, something that you might think of as end of the day, bedtime music. François Marcaurelle has his fender rhodes in a violin type sound for a short time that sounds, as we go back to the word, eloquent. Kick off your shoes and relax to this one.

Ma T'attende is track five and the sound of Francois on the rhodes takes me back to approximately 1974 and Herbie Hancock's Thrust release (remember that one?) and the track Butterfly from Herbie. Mellow, cool and refreshing is what this sound is all about.

Track seven is entitled Samba Sous Zero and the sound is definitely Brazil with the guitar sounds of Sylvain Provost, this tune is right out of the Bossa Nova era. If you ever dreamed of going to Brazil, close your eyes and this great music will do that for you.

When I first sat down to write this review I thought about how much a drag it was going to be to write a bad review but that was because I had only listened to a little bit of this release. As you listen more and more this music actually grown on you and you get deeper and deeper into it. Wonders never cease. This was actually a pleasure to write and the music was a pleasure to listen to. Jazz from Canada? You bet. It's François Marcaurelle!!!
