Christmas Break: Relaxing Jazz for the Holidays by Various Artists

This compilation for the 2006 holiday season from Telarc is remarkably crisp, entertaining, enjoyable, and a delight to replay often. There are many fine songs in the collection.

There are twelve songs on the CD. Among the many songs are Oscar Peterson on piano performing a memorable rendition of "White Christmas," Mel Torme singing "Christmas Time Is Here from a Charlie Brown Christmas," Jim Hall on acoustic guitar performing "O Tannenbaum," Jeanie Bryson on vocals with Kenny Barron on piano performing "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas," Dave Brubeck on piano with Gerry Mulligan on baritone saxophone performing "Santa Clause Is Coming to Town," the Geroge Shearing Quintet performing "Donkey Carol," the Ray Brown Trio with Kevin Mahogany on vocal and Russell Malone on guitar giving an impressive rendition of "The Christmas Song," Oscar Peterson on piano performing "Christmas Waltz," George Shearing on piano giving a very intimate version of "Away In A Manager" which is sure to delight his legion of jazz fans, Dave Brubeck's complex and wonderful version of "Silent Night," Al Di Meola on guitar with an outstanding rendition of "Ave Maria," and Dave Brucbeck on piano with "'Farewell' Jingle Bells."

This collection is sure to attract a wide jazz listening audience. The songs are timeless, and so are the performances by many of the jazz greats. This CD would make a lovely Christmas gift for those interested in excellent jazz treatments of Christmas standards. A winner!
