Say hello to a Canadian’s prodigy: Yoon Sun Choi, a gifted artist. She has done in her own unique way something which defies convention - yet marrows through the bone into melody- to become one of the best young singer talents in the downtown scene in a really long time. The most important thing is that Yoon Sun Choi sings very well - certainly improving on and reaching her own goals - and most importantly, she has a wonderful scat.... listen carefully to the second track and be aware that "Airbag" will propels you realms high away!
Yoon Sun Choi has interacted with great artists such as Mark Dresser, Kenny Wheeler, Mat Maneri, D.D. Jason, Ed Schuller and Mark Feldman.... . Furthermore, this lady has chosen multi-talented comrades to impress us with a wondrous making. Simply pay attention to Jacob Garchnik’s trombone - a Californian artist who brings about his voice into many ensembles such as the Ohad Talmor/Steve Swallow Sextet, the Jamie Begian Big Band; recorded (e.g.) for Palmetto Records, Omnitone; works with far-out composers as Joe Maneri, without mentioning his labour for Klezmer and Gypsy punk groups. Garchnik’s contribution to this release excels all over the five tracks. His pas de deux with Yoon’s voice is open-hearted.
Not to mention Jacob Sacks performance on the piano, (with whom Yoon Sun Choi has been collaborating for many years ago), Dan Weiss’s drums and Dave Ambrosio’s bass on "Back to you", Y.S. Choi’s composition. The lyrics of this first track as well as "Sorry" are of a stinging beauty and exacerbating melancholy.
It doesn’t matter how many schools you are compelled to bring up or how unpredictable you feel you are, or, how many failures you have reaped up.... one cannot help but listen (seven times at least) to the whole CD 4inObjects album to exorcise one’s tortured soul and inner demons.
« Close To You » is breathtaking with Garchnik’s trombone painting savant notes. The magic of Yoon Sun Choi’s release lies down the fact that it is a live recording (Greenwich House Music School in New York City) and that Choi is brilliant, naïve and touching, totally focused on her music, and on what she can give with her improvisations.
If you like to listen to combined intellect and mighty sounds, take the time to appreciate the exquisite and quixotic music of 4inObjects. Yoon Su Choi.... we passionate jazz listeners are grateful for all that you have given us...we will "keep coming back to you"....
