Blue Gardenia by Libby York

Libby York is a New York born jazz vocalist now residing in Chicago. Blue Gardenia is her first CD and hopefully, not her last. The smokey voiced singer reaches back to the 40s and 50s for most of the songs performed here. Ms. York is accompanied by a nice quartet including Bobby Schiff-piano, Jim Cox-bass, Phil Gratteau-drums and the fine guitar of Frank Portolese. I was pleased to see "Old Cape Cod" on this recording. It's a great melody that has been sadly neglected by jazz musicians. The late cornetist, Wild Bill Davison recorded it a few short years before his passing. "Blue Gardenia" is another fine tune that is seldom heard in a jazz presentation. Libby York presents herself as a mature and seasoned performer, very much at home in the swinging environment of the small jazz group. This lady has superb vocal control and I liked the session very much. Ten tracks in all.
