Come Fly With Me by Michael Buble

He has a passion for music written long before this 27-year-old Vancouver native was born. After a self-titled CD that has sold more than 700,000 copies in the United States and a staggering two million copies overseas, Michael Buble is just warming up.

With the release of his new DVD/CD, Come Fly With Me, filmed during his concert tour - which included stops in South Africa, New Zealand, Germany, England, Italy and a host of other countries - Michael has live audiences filled with young kids who are grooving to the music of Cole Porter and others.

Instead of hearing lullabies as a child, Buble’s grandfather serenaded him with Mills Brothers albums, Louis Prima, Bobby Darin and Frank Sinatra. That experience shows as Michael embraces all those personalities as he shapes his own style of vocal jazz. While the CD is relatively short - just eight songs that clock in at just over 30 minutes, the accompanying DVD includes concert footage of 12 songs, plus three additional videos. It’s all quite a treat as Michael sings with the passion and flair of an old-school phenomenon. He and his eight-piece band are totally in synch.

From the opening note of Nice ’n Easy to the soulful offering of Van Morrison’s Moondance, Buble and company are in top form.

The second track is a charming rendition of the ballad made famous by Elvis, Can’t Help Falling in Love. That’s followed by the somber jazz standard My Funny Valentine. Buble then swings with the classic Mack the Knife. The swinging continues with the bluesy Fever.

Michael then turns up the heat with a stirring arrangement of Stevie Wonder’s For Once in My Life. A song that is by no stretch of the imagination a jazz song, Buble and his band make it their own and jazz it up brilliantly.

The CD ends with Moondance, a perfect closer for an already wonderful performance.
