Esperanza by Esperanza Spaulding

Esperanza is the debut CD collection of musical prodigy, Esperanza Spaulding. For a debut work, this is perfect in all respects, and a highly memorable listening experience. Jazz listeners are in for a jazz treat with this young woman's performances and original compositions.

The songs are innovative, and listeners will enjoy her personal interpretation of the classic Johnny Green tune, "Body and Soul," listed as "Cuerpo Y Alma." This is an American standard which Spaulding sings in Spanish, and performed with a 5/4 time signature. This song swings under her performance!

The songs each have their own distinctive approach, and the listeners will quickly find each one is intimate and complex. Among the many fine songs are the Nascimento song, "Ponta de Areia." Spaulding contributes outstanding jazz songs with her own compositions with "Fall In," "Espera," "Samba Em Preludio" sung in Portuguese, and others.

This is not a debut CD to be missed, for it introduces a fascinating and gifted jazz performer-composer to contemporary jazz. Born in 1984 in Portland, Oregon, she discovered music by way of classical cellist Yo Yo Ma performing on the series, Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. At that point, she made the decision to make music her life. The rest is legend. Her coming into her own in the jazz medium is a wonderful addition to jazz music.

Perceptive in her techniques and personal stylings of bass playing, her voice adds to the beauty of her musical delivery. Esperanze is a winner, and so is this debut CD.
