Heres To Life by Obie Jessie

If you take a bit of Earl Coleman, a taste of Giacomo Gates plus Obie Jessie himself and what you have is a fine vocal artist.

Ellington's "Caravan" is treated to Jessie's excellent interpretation while Doug Carn's inventive comping sweetens the pot, and he cooks like a gourmet in his solo. A solid Trombone effort by Teddy Adams adds to the great feel of this tune. Scatting properly is an art in itself and Obie Jessie demonstrates it in fine style on this piece.

Jessie's warm Baritone on Cole Porter's masterpiece, "Everytime We Say Goodbye" is kind to the lyrics and respectful of the melody. The late Sulmari Celestral (his name is spelled differently on the back cover) gently but with a texture of consistency adds dynamic accompaniment to this Chanson D'amour.

Shirley Horn's poignant "Here's To Life" is given a masculine touch in Obie Jessie's superb rendition. The background vocals fit in nicely with the significancy intended by Horn.

This is a superlative recording sans the esoterica so often heard in this day and age.

There is a cordial greeting from Obie Jessie in every tune. One is made to feel welcome by this fine artists contribution to our art form
