In Budapest by Ella Fitzgerald

What is there to say about any performance by the late "Ella"? The superlatives have all appeared in print, radio, TV and every media known to mankind including smoke signals.

This CD features "The First Lady of Song" in concert at Budapest on May 20,1970 accompanied by Tommy Flanagan - piano, Frank De la Rosa - bass and Ella's favorite drummer, Ed Thigpen.

Nineteen songs are beautifully delivered by Ella and the trio including the ever present Mack the Knife, Lady is a Tramp, Mr. Paganini, etc. Happily, the singer pays tribute to some of the writers and performers of 1970 including such tunes as People, Girl From Ipanema, Cabaret, Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head and I'll Never Fall In Love Again.

All said, this is a fine concert but, in my opinion, lacks the punch, drive and enthusiasm of "Ella in Berlin".
