Into The Light by Julie Kelly

The fact that Julie Kelly is Oakland born comes as no surprise as the West Coast continues to produce wonderful jazz vocalists. Julie has been recording and performing in the Bay area for two decades. Ms. Kelly's classy alto voice and style are deeply rooted in the jazz idiom. Educated at Oakland City College and Cal State, the singer attended workshops by George Duke and Bobby Hutcherson. After a year spent in South America, she enrolled at Julliard in New York and has since worked with Benny Green, Nat Adderley, Gary Foster, John Clayton and the venerable Ray Brown.

This CD finds Julie in the company of pianist/arranger Bill Cunliffe and his trio with some fine guest soloists including guitarist Larry Koonse. The songs are quite diverse in style and musical heritage. Ranging from the classic "Love For Sale" (1930) through Sonny Stitt's "Blues Steps", Julie and the group take us on a swinging tour of jazz standards, obscure titles and even a song from "The Thomas Crown Affair." The singer's uncompromising style is evident throughout the performance. This recording is an experience in musical sincerity. A pure delight!
