Like A Woman by Dani Thompson

This is a pleasant effort from chanteuse and actress Dani Thompson. The set consists of two originals by Thompson and eleven standards and show tunes. Overall, the disc has a nice warm feeling, the tasteful backing by a piano trio creating the ambiance of a smoky cabaret...wait, she's in L.A, so forget about the smoky part.

Like the spare accompaniment, Thompson's vocals are likewise simple and breathy. The opening, languid reading of "You Go to My Head" is one highlight; others include versions of "The Way You Look Tonight" and "Sideshow." Though most of the tracks are effective, they don't all work for me. I'm not sure what she was trying to do with "Body and Soul (en Español)," but I don't like it.

Dani Thompson is a nice singer, able to express a fairly wide emotional range in a seemingly narrower vocal one. Pianist and producer Bud Thompson sets the table for her with elegant and unobtrusive playing. Bassist Timothy Emmons provides nice accents and drummer Tim Pleasant anchors the unit admirably.
