Ledisi is electricity personified, period. This intense and vocally powerful "gift" to music brings forth this latest sixteen-track R&B project with the force of a Category 5 hurricane. Here is someone whose forceful energy knows not bashfulness and can be felt with every note she belts out. I still get shivers whenever I hear her exclaim her outrage and pain on "The Rain," from the urban jazz album, Def Jazz. I thought I’d heard her at her best. Where did I ever get THAT impression??
Lost & Found is laden with heavy jewels of romance and fire in equal doses. In addition to her production skills and her prolific pen, the renowned Rex Rideout puts his thumbprint on this delightful offering by writing, producing, and performing here in classic form. Ledisi’s former partner, "Sun" Manning, is also drawn back into this tent of magnificence as a co-producer.
Ledisi’s soul-stirring and often reflective lyrics are anything but ordinary. Among my faves would be track 1 (the short but riveting live intro "Been Here"), track 6 ("Think of You"), the ultra-funky track 7 ("Today"), track 11, ("I Tried"), which is a lover’s surrender of sorts, and track 12, the title track, which is captivatingly simple in that it just features Ledisi on vocals, Rideout on piano, and Karen Briggs on a beautifully played violin. Broadway quality stuff, I tell you. Oh, there are several others that are equally well-done (track 15, "Someday," for example, is notable as being both poignant and joyful as she sings about Mom and Dad).
This dynamo exits in the same fashion as she enters---with the live "Been Here" "outro." Ledisi: Talent, class, and intensity. One tough combo to challenge.
