Love Makes The Changes by Freddy Cole

Making standards of his own, Freddy Cole lays down vocal tracks to remember for a lifetime. The catch phrase, "singing with feeling" has been used to describe masters and mistresses of song over the years. However, Freddy Cole takes this to a more altitudinous level by becoming the song's author and delivering the narrative of each phrase as though he is telling his personal life story through song. Listening to the lyrics, we see that they have real meaning to Cole and and formulates all the joy and pain expressed in these wonderful ballads. Cole is not overshadowed by the success of his late older brother Nat King Cole. He performs his music his own unique way and can make almost any song sound as though it was written just for him. Cole's voice has been compared to that of Ray Charles, conversely Cole's voice possesses much more latitude of range and diversity than that of the great Ray Charles.

Backing up this masterful voice is a cast of instrumental stars such as Cedar Walton on piano, Grover Washington Jr. on tenor sax and George Mraz on bass just to name a few. The title track, walks in swingin' a groovy little piano melody by Walton underneath a blusey tenor sax played by Grover. Freddy tells the story of life and how love makes the real changes in our meaningful walk through time. These changes can be both "sweet" or "sad" according to Cole but inevitable to say the least. On my favorite track, "On my way to you" Cole revisits the concept of destiny. He tells of how he can live his life with no regrets realizing that if he would have changed one single day, he may have not found his way to that one true love. What a wonderful story! If you enjoy great jazz vocals and don't mind songs that never seem to leave your memory, then check out Freddy Cole's "Love makes the changes".
