Pastiche by Pastiche

Pastiche is a fine vocal trio composed of Sandy Cressman, Jenny Meltzer and Becky West. Originating in San Francisco, this is the group’s third CD and jazz fans will find it delightful. Pastiche has toured both nationally and internationally in recent years and when not involved with their own music, they serve as background vocalists for other artists including Eddie Money and Pete Escovedo.

Although the trio performs in a number of styles, this CD is jazz all the way. The women have a wonderful feel for straight-ahead and Latin jazz styles. I really enjoyed their arrangement of Neal Hefti’s "Late Date" with its boppish feel. Another winner is the Latin flavored "Remember That" written by Jenny Meltzer and featuring percussionist Michael Spiro. Pastiche dig back into the 1930’s for a neat version of "You Hit The Spot" penned by Mack Gordon and Harry Revel.

The album was recorded in San Francisco and features some top local jazz instrumentalists but solos are few. The emphasis is on the fine vocal harmonization of Sandy, Jenny and Becky. It’s truly impeccable.
